Hi there,

a customer with 5 PC netwrok wants me to create a database system for them.

I can offer a solution running on a server with FM 8 server and have FMPro 8 on each machine but they want to spend as little money as possible on software.

So my questions are:

Can they use IWP without FM Server Advanced whilst the files are open on FM Server (not advanced)?

Is it a professional option (in terms of speed and ease of use) to share the database from one machine for all five without using FM server?

many thanks

Henk

Tell your customer the software is the cheapest part of the system.

No. However IWP for 5 users could be done with a normal copy of FMP 8.

No.

If your client wants a fast, stable, reliable system (and for any mission critical work they DO) then get them a dedicated server-class computer plugged into a UPS and put Win 2003 Server and FMS 8 on it. Set FMS 8 up correctly and get it to perform regular backups.

If that sounds expensive then ask them how much a week (or two) of downtime will cost them.
