two bodies or the like?

Hi again,

one more question - here what I'm trying to do (FM7):

I got bunches of individual records which need to be totalled by one parameter for viewing purposes only. (e.g. $2.00 / April 05, $4.00 /April 05, $10.00 / May 05 should look like: $6.00 April 05 / $10.00 May 05)

I got this done using a body/subtotal layout and viewing in preview mode.

now the problem: I need to do this whole thing twice, but I would need to create a second body/subtotal in the same layout for this - FM Help says I can't.....any way around this?

Regards,

What filemaker does is this: you can create trailing or leading subsummaries that respond to a sort.

see the attached JPG.

In layout view, create the subsummary and total parts.

date=date field

amount=number

month=calc=month(date)

total=summary, total of amount

monthlytotal=calc=GetSummary(total;month)

then after a sort by month you will see (in preview only) the monthtly totals.

yea - i got so far already and its working fine - the trouble is that i would need to do it twice. but I would need to have 2 bodies & subsummaries for that?

yes, one calculation as described (totals of records by a certain field, totaled up to one grand total), then another column of totals exactly like the 1st one, again totalled in one grand total - then finally the 2 grand totals added up

I am thick as a plank. please give an example. It's not what you see in attached jpg?

(you can add more subsummary parts and sort by multiple fields, sort order should be last part first. )

thanks for all your help kjoe!

let me try and explain, it is a bit more complicated than on the pic.

I got a lot of records with the fields

Amount & Transaction Type

What I want to display in the preview report is JUST the totals of each transaction type, so it looks like:

Transaction Type A - Total Amount for all Transactions of Type A

Transaction Type B - Total Amount for all Transactions of Type B

Transaction Type C - Total Amount for all Transactions of Type C

Grand Total - Grand Total Amount

(i don't want the individual Transcations to show)

all of that I got done by putting the individual transactions in the body & then the Transaction Type A etc. in the trailing subtotal. after that i can make the individual transactions disappear by "hiding" the body (reducing it's size in the layout to zero)

so far so good - but now the problem: I want to do this whole thing twice in one overview looking like that:

Paid In:

Transaction Type A - Total Amount for all Transactions of Type A

Transaction Type B - Total Amount for all Transactions of Type B

Transaction Type C - Total Amount for all Transactions of Type C

Grand Total In

---

Paid Out

Transaction Type D - Total Amount for all Transactions of Type D

Transaction Type E - Total Amount for all Transactions of Type E

Transaction Type F - Total Amount for all Transactions of Type F

Grand Total Out

---

Grand Total In - Grand Total Out

if I had 2 bodies (for the individual transactions) and 2 following subtotals (for the total transactions) I could make it work...

You can have more than one sub-summary part. So if transactions of types A, B, and C are marked as In, and transactions of types D, E, and F are marked as Out, your layout could look like this:

Sub-summary when sorted by in/out (leading)

Sub-summary when sorted by type

Sub-summary when sorted by in/out (trailing)

Trailing grand summary

Note that the body part can be deleted. Sort by in/out first, then by transaction type.
