Overwhelmed and don't know where to start

Hi, I'm very new in the Forum. I'm a visual artist / photographer and starting my photo database. I have FileMaker Pro 7 and unfortunately overwhelmed on where to start at this point. I have a learning curve when in comes to softwares and programs but unfortunately, filenaming all my images and categorizing them and registering the copyrights are all a bit too much on my plate right now. But as I trudge along with my filenaming ( I currently am all dumping them in a quark file for now) I know that I should just be brave and just start my FMP7 database.

Can anyone please advise me in terms on what book ( FMP Bible or Special Edition ) to get or should I just attend a class here in NYC? I want to create a database that I will be able to sort by year, photo categories or by serial numbers.

I appreciate any help and thank you.

Have you considered buying one of the commercially available image management applications? It might end up being faster and cheaper.

Unless you want to do this as a project to learn about FMP...

Look In your Templates folder for Photo Catalog and use import button.

Point the import to the folder where you store the pictures.

Turn on all four fields in import order.

There Phota Database.

I am open to "commercially available image management applications" but don't know which one to get.....do you have any advise?

But at the same time, I am challenged to learn FMP7...any beginner's book that you might want to suggest?

Thanks again!

If you want to see the basic possibilities for a specialist program try downloading the free version of Photoshop Album.

I am a plastic surgeon and have literally tens of thousands of patient images that I keep track of-- the best thing I have found (by far) is JASC photo album, cost about $50. I love FMP, but JASC wins on this topic.

I've found (as I was very new to FM once as well) that if you don't want to use another program the best way to start is to "draw" your dbase.

I sat with a glass of wine and a large piece of paper and actually drew out what information I needed, field boxes and field names and then I wrote what reports etc I needed. I found that visually I was able to "handle" the huge task at hand a bonus and it gives an excuse to have nice glass or two!

Cheers
