New to Developer - Desperately seeking help!

CarlK

Question

Hi,

I'm new to FM Developer 7 and have a question about windows in the runtime application. I bound my file and created a runtime however, when I executed the runtime (on Mac OSX) the red button used to close windows is disabled (grayed out). My application was designed with the ability for the user to close various open windows using the red close button. It works fine when I run the application from FileMaker Pro. Any ideas on what's going on? Appreciate any help you can provide.

Carl

Bill,

Having a close window button will not work when you are in "Preview" mode which I use quite extensively for users to preview reports. Can't believe this is the way the runtime is supposed to work. Must be other users of runtime out there that have run into this same problem? Hope to hear from them.

Thanks,

Carl

Using the windows "close" button actually quits that file and then requires reopening if needed again as opposed to the "minimized" or "hidden" window. This slows the db down.

Bil's suggestion is correct. In all FMP solutions, but especially in a runtime version, one should create scripts and buttons for all functions to ensure smooth functioning of the system. For instance, when switching from one module to another a button could call for:

Toggle Window (minimize)

Execute Script (External; Other File, Data Entry)

which would hide the current window and go to the data entry screen of the target file.

Be well . . .

Bill & Tom,

Thanks for your replies. I actually spoke to tech support at FM yesterday and they gave me a workaround but did admit that with the advent of FM 7 and multiple window options, there should be the ability to close the window through the normal native operating system close button (red circle in Mac and the "X" in windows).

My solution has one file with many tables. The user can click on a calculator button which I bring up in a new window where they can do their calculation and drag and drop the result into the main window. Because I didn't have a button with a script attached there was no way for the user to close that window (this works OK when I'm not using a runtime since the close button is available). I also had other challenges when opening up a separate window in preview mode which doesn't allow for scriptable buttons to work.

All in all, I think that FM Developer needs to be modified so you can close windows - especially since now we can have multiple windows open under FM Pro 7.

Thanks again for your help.

Carl
