Of course.

You didn't say if you were using Mac OS or Windows, but here goes for both:

Mac OS:

- To take a snapshot of the screen, I think the key combination is cmd-shift-3.

- To take a selective snapshot of part of the screen, press cms-shift-4, and use the cursor to outline the part you want to capture.

The result will be a numbered .PICT file to be found at the root level of the main hard drive. The files will be labeled 'Picture n' where n is the iterative number of the snapshot.

Your next step is to edit the file(s) in something like Photoshop and save in the appropriate format, either GIF, JPEG, or PNG.

Windows:

- To capture the entire screen, press PRNT SCR (Print Screen) on the keyboard.

- To capture only the top window, press ALT-PRT SCR.

Naturally, Windows does things in a pain-in-the-ass way, and in this case the image is loaded in the clipboard. That means you can't capture multiple images at once and you risk accidently losing the snapshot if you inadvertantly copy anything. Further, I've noticed that my copy of XP didn't come with MS Paint which means basic XP users are more helpless than Windows 95 users. (I retrofitted MS Paint from Windows 98 onto XP and it works fine now.)

Either way, eventually your next step is to edit the file(s) in something like Photoshop and save in the appropriate format, either GIF, JPEG, or PNG.

To get an understanding of when to use GIF, JPEG, or PNG, look for a tutorial at something like

Once you have your file(s), load them onto your web page in DreamWeaver.

Hi Leader,

That's curious, because all the installs of Xp that we have here include MS Paint.

I am wondering if that may be something to do with the edition. We use XP-Pro, so maybe it is XP-Home edition that comes without Paint. If so, that seems rather 'backwards' logic to me (Pro installations are more likely to be being installed with other tools so that users won;t need Paint, one would think?!).

You are absolutely right, both what you surmised and your assessment. I bought Home Edition (for home) and it did not have MS Paint on it. If I remember right, it was also missing WordPad.

At work, the default is whatever IT chooses to give us, and I didn't miss it there because I was using Photoshop.

Like you said, it's backwards. Thanks again, Microsoft!
