Portals & Relationships - How to “Get Creative!”

Most of the time we use a relationship and a portal to simply show a set of child records for the current parent record. The most common example is that of an invoice and line items. But relationships and portals should not be limited to this narrow set of functionality.

Andy Gaunt of Fusion Dezign will present how to “Get Creative” with relationships and portals. There will be several small demonstrations during the presentation and all files will be available for download from the Fusion Dezign website after the presentation. Below is a brief outline of what will be covered:

• Multiple portals on a single layout – A technique which may be used to target the appropriate portal

• Highlight Portal Row - A common technique for helping the user remember which portal row is currently selected -- especially useful when the portal rows are greater than can be displayed on the layout.

• Find without a Find - How to use relationships and Portals during simplistic Finds.

• Dynamic Portal - Expanding the user interface – a great solution for that ever decreasing “real-estate” issue faced by nearly every developer.

• Similar records – A technique used to show similar records when entering new data.

Andy Gaunt has been a FileMaker developer for over six years, moving to Orlando, FL from the UK. He is the founder of Fusion Dezign (http://www.fusiondezign.com) and the creator of eBullet, a permission based email marketing tool. Fusion Dezign is a full service development and consulting firm specializing in FileMaker Pro. The company also offers database needs analysis, custom consulting as well as web, graphic design and integration.
