FileMaker does not recognise letters with dieresis (Umlaut)?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Unfortunately I couldn't find any thread that could help me solve this issue.

Shortly, I need FileMaker to distinguish between words with and without Umlaut/dieresis. At the moment it seems like FileMaker does not see any difference between "Hagel" and "Hägel" and similar other words with ö, ü and ä.

Since these words have different IDs to which other related tables refer, it is all a bit of a problem. If I for example type "Jaggi" it links to the ID #584, which is not the "Jaggi"-ID but the "Jäggi"-ID instead. It basically just choses the "first on the list" instead of the real matching word (with or without dieresis).

I cannot figure out if it's a problem of system settings or of FileMaker itself. All text imported and exported as well as system settings are set on UTF-8.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I cannot believe I have been looking for a solution for days before deciding to post the thread... and now I just found the solution, sorry.

I could solve the problem by changing the field setting to Unicode (Manage Database > Field Options > Storage > Default language: Unicode instead of default English). Filemaker now recognises between ä and a.
