Eliminating unwanted Characters when coping field data

Hi Everyone.

I have a database of song titles that (usually) includes the song version. There are exceptions. I'm trying to create a formula that copies only the song title to a new field and omits the appended information.

I found this: Left(Version;Position(Version;" (";1;1)-1)

It sort of works in that it removes the appended data but, if there is no appended data, the entire name is deleted.

For example,

Source__________________________________Destination

An Unexplored Planet................................

An Unexplored Planet (Alt 1).....................An Unexplored Planet

An Unexplored Planet (Alt 2).....................An Unexplored Planet

An Unexplored Planet (Drums)..................An Unexplored Planet

Ice Dwarfs..................................................

Ice Dwarfs (Alt 1).......................................Ice Dwarfs

Ice Dwarfs (Alt 2).......................................Ice Dwarfs

Ice Dwarfs (Drums)....................................Ice Dwarfs

If someone knows how to modify my existing formula (or has a much better solution) so that my destination field is completely propelled, I'll be up a nd running.

Thanks in advance for your time,

Mitch

Phenomenal AHunter3! that's exactly what I was looking for. So if I understand the new formula correctly, your part is telling Filemaker to look at "Version" and, if it doesn't see " (" then just put "Version" in to the new field. If it does see " (" the follow my bit of the formula.

Thanks again,

Mitch
