smordarski
Can I replicate a Filemaker 5 database (I'm used to using MS Access 2000) for use on a laptop when it's away from my LAN. ie) When connected to the LAN I'll access the database on the server, when away from the LAN I need to use the database stored locally on my laptop. Once back on the LAN I need the changes I made while away to sync with the copy of the database on the LAN. I'm able to do this with Access 2000 using My Briefcase. Is there any way to do this FM5
Robert Schaub
The question is: Does your main computer have a steady IP address? If yes leave your main computer on. When away , dail your internet service, once you get online.Go to FIleMaker folder, open FM 5 using the Icon, Choose open existing file , Next choose host, specifiy host. In the specify host area enter the IP address of your main computer and address.. Then Wa La you can see your files. Make your changes online. (remote) If no then you would have copy your file onto a CD . Perferrably CDRW. Then load into laptop. Make changes while away. Reload onto a CD. Bring back to office and reload and replace into into your main computer.. Personally I like the IP option better.
smordarski
Thanks, I made a batch file that will automatically update the copy on my laptop when I plug into the network. The problem is, that while I'm away making changes (No phones or any other way to connect remotely), changes will also be made to the copy on the LAN at the office. In an ACCESS 2000 database you can "replicate" or make changes to both the main copy and remote copies that aren't connected and then they will automatically update each other once the remote copy (laptop) is plugged back into the LAN. Someone else made this database for me, but so far it looks like I may have to redo it in ACCESS. Thanks, Steve

That is not so difficult in FM. But what happens in Access or FM, when you and some of your colleagues will modify the same record? Which entry or modification is valid? smordarski
We wouldn't ever work on the same record, but if by chance it did happen I'd want the LAN copy to be the one that stays. I already know how to do this in ACCESS but I'm new to FM. Is there an easy way? Thanks, Steve
Robert Schaub
Hi Steve Here is a site to grab a file that may help you understand FM a little better. http://www.clickware.com/products_101tips.htm
Anatoli
I think you must first sync the LAN file to your file. That way your records will stay or will be overwritten by LAN version if change was made on LAN. Then you can sync the LAN db from your local file and new or changed records will be added or updated.
