Most Efficient Structure

I am working on an inventory solution where items are stored and transferred between locations.

I could easily set up an inventory table for each location, and transfer quantities between them. Another method would be to have a quantity field for each location within the Item table.

I would like to use some sort of a join table so that adding another location would not require the addition of new tables or fields, but I am not sure of the best structure for such a relationship. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Dean

Option 2. Or 2a, rather (a join table in which each record is the record of an Inventory Item at a specific Location ID with the quantity of "them x there"). You can expand it to handle 3, or 84,207 locations.

Option 1 would require you to have 3 (or 84,207) tables and your scripts would either be a morass of If / Else If / End If clauses or you'd have to have 3 (or 84, 207) scripts. Your relationship diagram would look like something generated by a 84, 207 orb spiders on crack. Won't scale up worth beans. Just don't go there.

Option 2 without the join table would not be too horrible for 2, 3, 4 locations (each inventory item appearing as many times as you have locations) but at 84,207 you'd really start to regret it.
