Need plug-in for basic file mgmt?

We have a large database of records for our archive (historical documents) and we'd like to be able to have copies of transcriptions (word) and pdfs of the original documents linked to their records. I think just having container fields with refrences to the files would be fine, as long as we don't move the files without updating filemaker. We'd also like to put some images in for some of the objects. Again, I think we can just use container fields.

 

However, someone suggested looking into Troi File plug-in. It's very nice, but I don't know that we really need it. Am I right?
