Value List-Display Related Fields

I'm having trouble displaying related fields to a value list. I've followed the instructions for such from the Filemaker website and it works - BUT what happens is seems to update the records.

 

e.g. My value list is of a field called "CATEGORY". The setup is to display all ITEMS (in second list) of CATEGORY that is chosen. As I said, it works - but what happens is that if I choose "Category A", it updates my CATEGORY field with whatever selection has been chosen. It seems that wherever the cursor is in the Main database, that record is updated.

 

I simply need to list all unique CATEGORY, when selected, list all unique ITEMS. thanks,

Hi dcgall,

 

use a global field and attach your category value list to it.

 

If you now use that global on the left hand side of the relationship (and on your layout) it will all work without changing the data in your existing field.

Phil, thanks for the response. When I follow your suggestion, it does preserve my original data, but what happens is the ITEMS list does not update according to the CATEGORY chosen. ???

Have you edited your items value list to show only related items, starting from the relationship that uses the global?
