imnxcguy
Hi, I'm a novice-intermediate user of Filemaker Pro 7 (never had a reason to upgrade). I've got a race timing program I'm trying to do, and I'm trying to figure out how to: Create an ordered list (sorted first by their age class, and then sorted by their finishing time). I can get a place number by simply putting a "count" field in there, but I want to get a place number that re-starts for every time the division changes, which is handled in a sub-summary part. (For instance, a place for men racers and then a place for women racers). It's probably simple, but I can't figure out how to do this. Thanks for any help. Weetbicks
Create a summary field called "Placing" it make it type Count, tick the boxes "running count" and "restart summary for each sorted group", on the right hand side where it asks to sort, sort by the same field that your sub summary part on your report is sorted by (ie Gender, Class etc..) imnxcguy
Thanks for the reply. In FM7, I don't have the "restart summary for each sorted group" option, just an option to Summarize Repititions Altogether or individually. When I follow the instructions below, it still just gives me a total count. Thanks, Mark

imnxcguy
So, does anyone know of a way to do this via FM 7? OR am I out of luck?
David Head
You can do it with a nasty looping script that sets a field for each record in the found set. The reason it is nasty is that there are issues in a multi-user environment with record-locking and changing modification dates. That is why FileMaker Inc., introduced the new feature - it was needed by people like you. People keep asking why they should spend the money to upgrade their FileMaker Pro. It's a no-brainer to me.
