techt
I keep getting a message that pops up when I try to open my database that says.... "Filemaker cannot share file because another user is already sharing files using Filemaker Pro on this computer." I am running this on a mac, and I typically have 2 other computers in my house that try and access the database from over my wireless network. When this message comes up it has an ok button that comes up and I can press it and the message goes away. I get one of these "error" messages for each of the windows that typically opens up. After I click ok to all the messages, the database opens as normal on my computer. When I try to open remote on my two other computers I cannot see the files as I normally can on my computer. Its saying that the only file it can find on that IP is FMServer_Sample. Last week I had a filemaker developer here, and we installed a few things. We installed 3 apps from a place called FM Studio. They were dreamweaver and paypal plug ins. While he was here we realized that we needed Filemaker Server to make those Plugins work. So just to see if that would fix the problem we were having....he downloaded a trial of FM Server 9. He says he didnt install it....but why else would my other computers be seeing FMServer Sample Files??? Can anyone help me with this? Now I cant open my files on my other computers. Please help if you know how. I have removed the apps we installed and removed FM Server from my computer as best I know how. Perhaps I am missing something. Run Activity Monitor from the Utlilties folder and view all processes. If you have any processes running that start with the string 'fmserv' then you have FM Server installed and running. Even if it is not running you may still have it installed. Best run that installer again and use the uninstall option. FM Server 9 distributes folders and files to many places on your hard drive. It is not recommended to be using FileMaker client and server on the same machine simultaneously. ...access the database from over my wireless network. Wouldn't recommend that either. Using wireless networks to access modifiable databases is a risky business. Sooner or later you will get a connection drop and corrupt your database. This is one of the things they don't tell you on the tin when you opt for wireless. Not only is it slower than using a cabled network but wireless, by it's very nature, is a broadcast medium and, as such, subject to all the laws of radio wave propagation and inhibition. Databasic
My only experience with FM Serv was V8 on windows - and as I recall the files to be shared should be located in a sub directory called "Data" or "databases"within FM server ( it may be either or both )I havn't used this program for some time - but if you place a copy of your files in the same sub directory as the sample folder it may show them on the remote option .
