ajoyce
There has to be a simple answer to this question, though I've looked and looked. Basically, I don't want the option to add a new record through the menu item. I only want to add a new record via a script because of the nature of what needs to be entered into that new record. It appears that my only option is to use a plugin called secureFM but that's really overkill for me and I can't justify the $155 cost to disable one menu item. I'm not distributing any solutions to anyone. This is only for my use and those who access my machine to use the file. Is there any way to do this without shelling out big bucks? If it were a $10-20 investment I could handle that, but no way can I spend $155.
Inky Phil
If you change your privelige set to one that does not allow creation of records and then set the record creation script to run with full privileges that might work....but i have never tried it so forgive me if it doesn't Phil
ajoyce
Thanks Phil. I've tried using the privileges and nothing I do seems to work. In fact, it just makes things more complicated because of the need to log in and have passwords on the file, etc. etc. All I want to do is eliminate the option of doing Command/N or choosing the menu item to create a new record. I guess there isn't a simple answer and I'm left with creating a huge ugly button that screams out "here I am, here I am! Click me! Click me! Ted S
ajoyce, I'm hoping you have more that one privilige set. For your typical user privilige set try setting the "Available Menu Commands" to edit only. I think that will prevent your people from using hot keys and pull down menus. Jack Rodgers
There are two easy answers both of which involve creating a new menu/item. With Filemaker Developer or Advanced as it may be called, you can create new menus and either assign them to a layout, set them via menu or use the tools menu to set the menu(s). Using this you can assign or delete any of the Filemaker standard menus and create your own new items and attach scripts to them. Using the main page of this forum and doing a search for 'menu plugin" I found several suggestions and one that I've tried: CNS Menu. If I remember correctly this also lets your create popup menu menus and other stuff. This might work for you.

There's a big problem with your suggestion, Jack, though I sincerely appreciate your willingness to respond and try to help. The problem is that I don't have Filemaker Developer or Advanced. I have FM Pro 8.5. I know that I could purchase the Advanced program and fill my need, but I'm trying to do this without breaking open my piggy bank... or taking out a second mortgage on my house, which may be the option needed instead of breaking my piggy bank. I too did a search... in fact I've done many searches not only in this forum but through Google, and haven't come up with any good solutions. The results of those searches I attribute to either there is no solution or the solution involves spending a lot of money to get something that I don't currently have. But... I really do mean it when i say that I appreciate your time in offering advice. It's just advice that doesn't work for me.

I forgot to respond to Ted in my last post. Thanks for your suggestion. I have two privilege sets. One of those is for Admin and the other is Guest. The guest one is not activated. When I was playing around with the privileges options I tried a lot of different things but nothing really did the job. In fact, what it did was to create more hoops to jump through because with more privilege sets it mean that I had to set passwords and log in and all that stuff. The people that are using the file are basically my wife and my son and me. And, I'm the primary user. They may use my computer to access the file for their purposes. I wanted to just make sure that I used the script rather than the keyboard shortcut when I created a new record. That's really all I had in mind. That's why it's just not feasible to pay out bug bucks for a solution. If it can't be done, then I guess it can't be done. I thought I'd put it out on the forum in case there was something I'd overlooked (which is probably considerable). Thanks. Art
