"My file Name" could not be opened (not found)

Peter Ardis

Question

My database works fine except when I create a runtime version of it. I cannot figure out why it cannot not find the specified files. I have named the project folder in the runtime version the same as the original. This only happens with two of the five files. It does find the other three.

I opened FM PRO adv, I clicked on the exe. file that one would normally click on to open the runtime version and an error appeared stating that the "translator for this file format could not be initialized or was not available". So I then clicked on "my file.ard" and it still could not find my files i.e. the original problem.

To give some back ground...As I built the database I would save my file as 4.0, 4.5, and so on so that I new what was being changed and what file to work on incase I lost anthing. The file it is looking for is a is a 7.0 file when the database is now at 7.5. I have searched through my relationships graph and tables and cannot find any reference to the older file. When it asks to locate the file, and I select the 7.5 version it solution works fine.

I have tried it both for my mac and PC versions and neither runtime will work.

Thanks for you support.

That's not what I asked you to do. Please make a folder; copy all the files that constitute your runtime and paste them into that folder. Ignore the .exe file in that folder but all of the DATA files, which will have an extension that you specified (the default would be ".usr"), change their extension to ".fp7". Now open them in FileMaker Pro, by launching FileMaker Pro, going File, Open, navigating to that folder, and selecting the file containing the script that tries to open "my file Name". Try to run the script. What happens?

Is "my file Name" a database file that is also part of the runtime file set? Or is it a FileMaker file that exists outside/apart from the set of files that you created a runtime from?

You don't open the .exe file with Filemaker using the open file dialog. This is most likely the run time application or other application.

You open the files with the .fpx ending or whatever you used when you created the runtime.

Create a folder called RUNTIME and redo the runtime creation and target this folder as the final destination of the Runtime. Now double click on the saved files so they will open with the RUNTIME.

I did as you said - changing file extensions, opening from FM PRO etc. Same result. Still looking for the file.

You said,

"Is "my file Name" a database file that is also part of the runtime file set?" YES

So it does it even when you've got the solution open in FileMaker Pro. That eliminates it being something specific to the runtime engine and its proclivities. So you can ignore the 'run-timiness' of this thing and boil your problem down to "I've got a script that's supposed to open a file, but when it runs it says 'File not found'."

OK, with that in mind,

a) Please print out your script to PDF (I see you're on a Mac: convenient) and type out what you see, here, verbatim.

b) Please tell us the name of the file it's supposed to be opening. Copy the filename directly to the clipboard and paste it here, if you would. Oh, and if it's not in the exact same folder as the file that's trying to open it, describe the folder hierarchy that lies between the two files.

c) Since the Open File script step draws its available values from File References, please open File References and copy the entire file reference for this file to the clipboard and paste it here.

1. My opening script is as follows (verbatim):

Opening

Show Custom Dialog [ Title: "Welcome to the ISSP Mangegment System"; Message: "Welcome. This is the central location. From

here you will be able to access the ISSP, P2, P4, P5 and Behavioural Management Plans."; Buttons: “OK” ]

Open File [ “Pathway Four Management System 7.5” ]

Open File [ “P2 Record of Supports 7.0” ]

Open File [ “P5 Alternate Curriculum” ]

Open File [ “BMP Forms” ]

Open File [ “Competing Pathways” ]

Select Window [ Current Window ]

Show All Records

----

The files that won't open in Runtime are in bold. (I have added this here.)

Strangely enough I am getting an error stating that it cannot open "Pathway Four Management System 7.0 prior to the "Welcome..."message occurs. If I cancel and continue the script it asks again to find it again after the welcome message.

2. The file I want open is in the same folder as the other files. It is named exactly this:

"Pathway Four Management System 7.5.fp7 ". As for the folder hierarchy, I thought this was the original problem. But even within the runtime the files are all within the same project folder.

3. ???? NOT SURE here. Do want the entire list (i.e. the whole list of all external data sources or just the one for the files that won't open.) (Note: I have occurrences in my relationship graph to this file but with different names)

So, I opened Manage External Data sources and selected the file from the list. Can't copy from this box. Clicked edit. I copied the title and the file path. Hope this is what you wanted. And here they are... Name - Pathway Four Management System 7.5 , file path is, file:Pathway Four Management System 7.5.fp7 and Name - P2 Record of Supports 7.0 ,File path is, file:P2 Record of Supports 7.0.fp7

You may also get a file not found error if you don't include a 'mystery' file in your runtime set.

Suppose one of your files links to another file you didn't include in the set or there is a value list or something else in another file not in the runtime set. Then you should get an error.

OK. For the first file, where in File References you have it designated like so:

file:Pathway Four Management System 7.5.fp7

Keep that but under it add

file:Pathway Four Management System 7.5.fpx

Also click the "Browse" button and navigate directly to the file and let it store the path as it "finds" it, if different.

Okay I did as you said and assuming I did it correctly nothing changed.

ALAS I have solved the problem. I believe that it was the decimal . in the file name. As is 7.5 and 7.0. It was asking for the file "Pathway Four Management 7". It did not want an older version but instead the file specified before the decimal or dot. I change the external data sources references, recreated the runtime and it opened without any errors in locating the files.

Ahunter3 and Jack - Thank you for guiding me through this.

Does the solution I suggested make sense?

Amazingly grateful. Peter.
