tessgold
Can somebody please help me before my explodes? I'm very new to Filemaker and databases in general, but I know there's a way to do this, and I can't figure it out: I have a database of mothers. I have created four fields for each mother - Child 1, Child 2, Child 3 and Child 4. Each child has a data entry field for their birthdate, and I figured out (with help) how to calculate their age from that. Now I've been asked to come up with a report that shows how many 1 year olds we have, how many 2 year olds, etc. I've been rummaging through The Missing Manual all evening and still don't have a clue. Maybe somebody could just point me in the right direction? thanks, tess
mfif
What happens when someone has quintuplets? You need a relational setup. In my Missing Manual (for version 8), it's explained in Part Three: Multiple Tables and Relationships. Once you have a mothers table and a children table, and those two tables have been linked, the calculations will be easy to work out because you will only need to look at one field (the age field). tessgold
Thanks mfif, I will give that a try. This is the first time I've built a database using more than one table, and I already have 5 besides the main one, so I'm not eager to add another. I keep thinking I'll mess up what I've already done. But you're right, I'm in trouble if anybody turns up with more than four kids. And it's creating headaches like this counting thing. But that leads me to a second stupid question. If I use a separate table for the children will I be able to build a data entry layout to enter both the mom's and the children's info at the same time? If I just add a field from the other table into my existing layout it won't let me enter any data. I'm trying to keep the data entry form as simple as possible. I don't need a long answer, just a hint again of where to look in the Missing Manual would be great.
tessgold
mfif, I think I figured it out. I edited the relationship to allow me to enter the data through a portal. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
mfif
Great! Keep it up. Getting the manual was a good move. Wish I'd found one when I started out in FileMaker...
