I think the folks here will need a bit more information to go on in order to help you.

If you want to know what FileMaker can do (and it can do a LOT!) then I suggest you download the business kit from the FileMaker website and have a look through that. It includes various elements such as ordering, catalogue, invoicing, clients details, mailshots etc. This should give you an idea of what can be accomplished within the FileMaker environment.

After that, I guess you'll have to look at your own business and decide whether FileMaker can help you be more efficient/productive and take it from there. smiley-smile

Kinda like asking an architect, I have a hammer, what can I do with it...

Start with this idea:

Inquire among the employees as to what automation of data they need.

Print Mailing Labels

Schedule production

Inventory control

Internal messaging

Fax

etc...

If no one needs anything, why bother. However, they will...

Like Kristy mentioned, download the FM application demo and the demo files and let people look at them.

You might even search Filemakers site, this list and others for Vertical Solutions for the publishing industry.

thanks a lot for the information kristy and jack.

I guess I have to start from the scratch and do a lot of paper work before getting my hands on filemaker pro.

Yes, and if you're planning to build your own databases for use by other people, read David Kachel's White Paper, which you can find at the homepage, buy a manual and read that, and also read anything you can find about user interface design. (I like Steve Krug's "Don't Make Me Think".)
