Putting Runtime Solution on my website: newbie question
Hi, I've discovered deploying my FM as a runtime solution to share with coworkers that don't have FM. I've followed various tutorials on creating the FM runtime solution and it seems to work fine when I put it on a flash drive or CD and give to people. I've also uploaded the whole runtime directory to a my website... my limited understanding is that now people can access the same file via a web browser... (?) If this is correct... I'm not sure what the url would be to my runtime solution/file. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. cheers.

Runtime and iPad/iPhone access
Hi Guys, I have a request from a customer who owns a standalone of a product for OSX I built for him to manage his professional wine cellar. Before I spend too much time on it maybe someone can share their experience or background on this question. Can an iPad/iPhone connect to the standalone database on the same network? He would like to use his iPad while in the cellar doing inventory, uploading bottle pictures and such. He has no reason to use the server productand purchasing a full blown license just to run an application we already have deployed seems a bit "rich" because he is only a one person operation. Thanks in advance Jeff

runtime solution and user name prompt
I have created a new runtime solution and the first time i run this on my winxp pc, I am prompted for my user name (my windows user name is automatically entered in the box). So after pressing the ok button, my solution starts. Even though it only does this the first time, is there a way to deactivate this within my database or am I stuck with this?

RunRev's LiveCode - anyone with experience in this alternative dev environment?
I have been investigating RunRev's LiveCode product, a suite of development tools that provides cross-platform deployment of applications on Mac, Windows, Linux, IOS, WinMobile, Android, Web, and server versions (they even have a deprecated Mac Classic deployment option!). The language is high level stuff - quite easy coding, and they have the App Store stuff all worked out. There is an FM Migrator tool in the suite of products, and it appears that there is a robust and active developer community. http://www.runrev.com/ Insights and experiences greatly appreciated. They have some really aggressive pricing but only available until Sunday, so rapid response ti…

Protecting your Application - new product from Froodware
Froodware is proud to launch a unique plug-in; The Protector. Now you can safely hand out your Filemaker solutions or offer them as a download from your website! This plug-in adds copy protection, licensing and purchasing from within your Filemaker solutions. Anyone can try your solution, but after the trial period they need to purchase a license. You do not need to invest in payment software, payment security, everything, even VAT, is handled by the plug-in, and done in cooperation with the eSellerate webstore. For your network clients you can rest assure that if a client expands his network, they will buy the extra licenses needed. At this moment the Plug-I…

Global field - saving to a Host
Good Morning I have inherited a database previously developed in ver 6 and upgraded to ver 11. It is now being hosted on an external FM server to be accessed country wide including myself to continue to develop it as the client has the need. I am new to Server Hosting and the issues that arise, hence my query. I have a Global field where I have populated data from my remote access. When the files are closed & reopened the data is not saved. I understand that only global changes can be made only on the Host. Is this correct and if so - is there a way around it. The Hosted files are not easily accessible and would require the Host Company to make the ch…

Unusual uses for FileMaker
Sure FileMaker can run databases. But what else can it do? I was thinking about using the Kiosk mode from developer to build an information kiosk on a touchscreen computer to display product lines at a trade show. Sure, Flash might be more impressive, but I don't know Flash!!!! Plus FileMaker ensures that the data will be easily upgradable. So what's the most unusual thing you have called on FileMaker to do?

Workflow control, my approach
Hello everybody I'd like to develop a workflow control. I am tired of coding each possible way of what the next workflow-step might be. I thought I base the workflow on the records overall status code. A overall status code is nothing else then a combination of status fields. Each field holds a status, like "in process" or "open" or whatever. Depending on what the overall status is, I can choose, lets say from a dropdownfield, what the next possible action should be. An action will alter a status field and therefore the overall status leading to a new overall satus code. Each action is tied to a script. All of the overall status codes will be stored in a w…

Unhappy
I've had a solution I've sold using runtime since 1997. I have thousands of clients. Every new version of Filemaker I keep thinking "this will be it". But it never is. I cannot believe Filemaker can't issue a patch to developers to distribute that will update for new OS's. Almost every major OS release brings another issue with the runtime. How long must we deal with the hoops we need to jump through to update existing runtimes? I'm willing to pay, handsomely, for these things. I'd pay double for a runtime version that has real update capabilities. I'd pay a yearly fee. At this point I'd throw in my first born - he's a bad seed anyway. They just d…

Updating data in a runtime
I have Filemaker Pro Advanced instaled in my home computer. I can't install it at work as I don't have administrator previleges in my company network. As I need the database to work I build a runtime at home and take it to work in a pen drive. I have scripts to export new data I get at work to excel files, and then I import them to my filemaker files at home. I'm constantly improving my database with new layouts, and stuff all at home. Everytime I change anything I have to build a new runtime. I share the runtime with other people, not all phisically near. I would like to be able to send just the modifications to the other people by email, as the .usr files are qui…

Buttons not appearing
I have a simple runtime solution with just a few layouts and tabs with portals in them , built with FMP 10 in windows. It is sitting on a file server and is not used often, so only one user at a time. It is not IWP or anything like that, it's just a runtime solution. It works fine on all but one computer, which is running XP pro. The file opens fine but no buttons or even the lines around tabs or portals appear. (The buttons are only drawn with FMP so no graphic files involved) The cursor changes over where the buttons should be, and the buttons work, but you can't see them. I cannot reproduce it on my Mac or any other machine. All the PC 's are HP, the same and relati…

How to migrate spider to TOG?
The last few FM apps that I built, are all TOG based (after a great deal of futzing around, just to find out that TOs are, in effect, an alias to the source table, but filtered based on the relationship). It has been a very, very successful piece of learning, making FM development a far, far easier thing than in the past. But the past is what is haunting me now. I have an older (still FM9) application that is a spider diagram mess. I want to convert this to a TOG structure for some planned significant upgrades. I think I clearly understand what needs to be done; what I DON'T understand, is the appropriate order in which to make changes, to have the minimum work to do…

General FileMaker Pro Development Method?
Hi all, I am new to FMP development. I found it difficult to carry out on going FMP development since when I am developing a new function on an existing database, users have to stop working on the database and wait for me. This is not acceptable since the development may take a long time. Is there any way to have a test environment that I can safely play with, and once I am happy about the new functions I can quickly roll them out to the production database? Thank you in advance!

JPEG screen display
This is in Filemaker Developer 6, we have a container field where the end user can insert their logo. The logo is in jpeg, it prints out fine but displays jagged on the screen. The same jpeg displays fine on a mac but not fine on a PC. The logo previews perfectly in other applications on the PC just not in filemaker. This is an executable filemaker program that was created with Developer 6. any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Filemaker Developer
I've got a question concerning Filemaker Developer. I'm creating several databases in Filemaker 4.1 (Mac/Win) for my office but actually I would come to one application. Now I noticed that I need Filemaker Developer to create such applications. Does someone know if I buy FMD5 if the created applications then also run under a FMPro 4.0 and 4.1. ? Also is there someone who can tell me where I can find a older version of FMD4 (dutch version, if this ever existed). Thx a lot Christof

Web Scrapping
I am aware Filemaker will do web scrapping, but I am unsure that it will do it to this extent? I have websites that require that I put in user name and password. These are railroads website that we use to trace shipments. So after signing in, we input the shipments and get the results (ie where the shipment is). Can Filemaker do this?

Filemaker Runtime Updating versions
I have a created a database that I would like to sell as a standalone runtime solution. Once a customer has purchased the database, and has added entries including jpeg graphics in a container field, if I create a new version, how does the user with the old version update to the new version without loosing his data, including jpegs? There is a data file that is in the old runtime folder, but if I copy that file to the new runtime folder, it won't recognize it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What am I missing ???
I created a simple form template, whereas the user fills out the information, hits the email button icon, and the program should save a copy of the form as a PDF (w/o dialog) and starts the email program with the To field and the subject line field already filled out. It works perfectly in authoring mode, but when I try to create a runtime, and the user hits the email button icon, I get an error message, Save Records as PDF has been canceled. Do you wish to continue with this script? If I continue, the email program starts up, with the To field and the subject field information all correct, but does not attach the PDF file that should have been created...??? What am I…

Transferring passwords to updated solution
Is there a way to transfer the user ID and passwords from an existing solution to an updated solution? My customers have invested time and energy setting up accounts for each user. (I provided an interface so they could use filemaker's built in security.) Now I would like to send them an updated runtime package with additional features. I understand how to load their data from the old solution, but I don't see a method of transferring user ids and passwords (or I would actually think password hashes.) If this is not possible, as I suspect, maybe someone has some experience on how to make the extra work of setting up the users (again) more palatable. Any ideas or ad…
